You’ve no authority to interfere in HR duties; focus on your job – MP slams Sam George [Audio]

Mpraeso Member of Parliament (MP), Davis Ansah Opoku, has criticized the recent decision by the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, to sack about 100 employees at Ghana Post.

Describing the move as inappropriate, OPK, as he is popularly known, accused Mr. George of overstepping his boundaries.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, OPK admonished the minister to focus on his job rather than dismissing people.

“He probably thinks that being a minister makes him the chief executive officer of all the agencies under the ministry.

“Not long ago, he dismissed some officials at the National Communications Authority (NCA) who were recruited as far back as 2017 and were not government appointees. Ghanaians did not vote for the NDC to be sacking people,” he criticized.

Sam George on Tuesday announced that he had authorized the terminations as part of a broader initiative to rationalize and streamline operations within the ministry and its affiliated agencies.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. George disclosed that almost 600 staff recruited into the ministry and its agencies after the 2024 elections are under review, with more expected to go.

However, OPK argued that the minister has no authority to interfere in HR duties, describing the dismissals as politically motivated.

“He should focus on his job because that is what Ghanaians expect of him. His move will not help anyone.

“I confronted him on Tuesday at a committee meeting, and he told me he is acting for and on behalf of the President, so if I’m not happy, I can proceed to court,” he said.

The lawmaker further revealed that he has filed a motion and urgent questions in Parliament regarding the dismissal of some NCA officials, but no action has been taken yet.

Expressing his determination to right the wrongs, he suggested that the dismissed workers come together and file a class action suit.
