Members of the region’s House of Chiefs have lamented that the Akufo-Addo administration has neglected the area, leading to a decline in the well-being of the people.
According to the chiefs, the handling of infrastructure projects in the region under the current government has been disastrous.
The disgruntled chiefs highlighted several concerns, including the decline in cocoa production, abandoned road projects, the destruction caused by illegal mining, and the failure to support fishing. These issues, they said, have made life unbearable for the people, urging the government to take immediate action to address these problems.
The chiefs raised these concerns during an engagement with National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, who is currently on a campaign tour in the area.
The chiefs questioned why a region that contributes resources such as oil and gold to the country has been neglected for the past eight years.
“For those of us in the Western region, we are really suffering. If we have offended the government in any way, we are willing to come and apologize. Our roads are in bad shape and have been abandoned,” one of the chiefs said.
The queen mothers also expressed their frustrations, demanding their fair share of the national resources.
“I will appeal to you, Mahama, to remember us when you come into power because we have been neglected for a long time. Our water bodies have been destroyed,” one of the queen mothers said.
