The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has called for the resignation of President Akufo-Addo, citing the sharp depreciation of the cedi as a key failure of his administration.
Addressing supporters at a campaign rally in Nkwabeng, in the Nkwanta South District, at the end of his Bono East Region tour, Mr Mahama expressed deep frustration with the government’s economic management.
He highlighted that, the cedi’s dramatic fall, noting its depreciation from over GH¢15 to one US dollar.
Drawing a comparison between his tenure and the current government’s performance, Mr Mahama underscored the stark differences in inflation rates and the exchange rate, emphasizing that the current administration’s economic policies have significantly worsened the cost of living for ordinary Ghanaians.
The former President argued that a truly accountable leader would have resigned when the cedi first started its steep decline.
“During the late President Atta Mills’ administration, the exchange rate was GH¢2 to a dollar. When President Akufo-Addo took office, it was GH¢4 to a dollar. Now, after nearly eight years, it has risen to GH¢16 per dollar,” Mahama pointed out.
He further lamented the rising cost of essential goods, including cement, attributing it to the government’s poor economic stewardship.
