The Electoral Commission (EC) has reiterated its position that elections can be rigged in favour of a candidate or a political party.
The Director of Electoral Services at EC, Benjamin Bano-Bio has emphasised that the electoral body has no plans to manipulate results.
In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday he stated not even the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Director of IT and Election, Dr Edward Omane Boamah can rig elections for his party as EC Chair.
“The EC ensures transparency and fairness. Our duty is to ensure that nobody is cheated at the end. Since 1992, opposition parties have always attack the EC but I will say that even if Omane Boamah is made EC Chair, there is nothing he can do for his party to influence the election results,” he stated.
He stated that, the election is a process which is transparent with all relevant stakeholders involved, including the political parties.
“If you think someone is not qualified to register, you have the power or authority to challenge it and the acceptance doesn’t lie with the EC. There is a committee and the EC District Officer only serves as a secretary and the decision of the committee is what is finally,” he noted.
Mr Bano-Bio acknowledged that the NDC may mean well, adding it will be the exact posture of anyone who is afraid of being cheated.
However, he can emphatically say that the EC has nothing to hide and is committed to a level playing field.
