A former Deputy Finance Minister, Mona Quartey, has said that it is not possible to undo eight years of recklessness in just one year while laying out strategies that the next NDC administration under John Mahama will put in place for the execution of its transformation agenda.
According to her, 2025 will be the year when significant structures will be laid out to establish the foundation and reforms that will govern the policies the new government intends to implement.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, December 16, Mrs. Quartey outlined some measures that will safeguard and stabilize the country’s utility sector, expressing strong confidence that the strategies will be warmly welcomed by the public.
“The laws that will govern the reforms that we are bringing in—the big push we would have to look for a lot of money to stabilize the energy sector. In fact, all the utility sectors that will support industrialization will be addressed. Labour laws would also need to be in place to support the 24-hour economy, which I know many people will be encouraged to tap into in order to increase productivity,” she revealed.
She further emphasized the next administration’s preparedness to fulfill its promises.
“2025 will be about preparing the ground for that. You have to first prepare the land, plant the seed, and nurture it. So that has to happen; you cannot reverse eight years of recklessness in one year,” she added.
Mrs. Quartey also claimed that once people realize the government’s efforts in encouraging both local and foreign investments, it will further boost productivity, and enough money will be generated to run the country.
She noted that 2025 will be a year of effort, with measures put in place to ensure effective governance.
“So, 2025 is going to be the year of effort, putting all the structures in place to underpin and anchor where we are going, and then we will get the help we need to move forward,” she said.
Mrs. Quartey expressed confidence in the incoming government’s commitment to ensuring that a solid legacy is left behind after its tenure expires.
“We are going to make sure that we leave a legacy, so the four years of that government will be a time of creating the foundation for starting the work laid out in our manifesto, which I said is not a promise but an action plan. The benefits will start rolling in by the second half of the third year into the fourth year, making the subsequent years even more prosperous,” she explained.
She asserted that the incoming government would ensure that people are held accountable for their actions, revealing stringent measures to do so and sending a caution to those who fall short.
“In our manifesto, we talk about Operation Recover All Loots. We talked about forensic audits, and there will be a serious audit of the economy. So, people are going to be put on alert that, look, you cannot be put in charge of a program, mess it up, and think you can walk away. You cannot be put in charge of public procurement, mess it up, and expect some clearing agent to clear you. It won’t happen going forward,” she cautioned.
