The leader of Yamfo Youth Association, Asate Nana Gyamfi Kumanini Ameyaw, has called for an urgent investigation into the death of Richard Antwi Agyei, a 30-year-old nurse at the Yamfo Health Center, who allegedly died due to police brutality.
The incident occurred on Friday, April 4, when a group of angry youth gathered at the Yamfo Police Station, attempting to set it on fire in protest of the nurse’s death.
The military intervened with warning shots to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation.
Speaking to the media, Nana Ameyaw praised the Ahafo Regional police for taking action but insisted that the investigation must be fair and unbiased. He cautioned against shielding any officers involved in the incident, particularly those from Duayaw-Nkwanta, as such actions could stir further unrest among the youth.
The youth leader also warned against drug abuse in the community, urging those involved in the drug trade to stop to avoid future incidents.
The unrest reportedly followed a police raid on a location known for Indian hemp smoking and peddling, where Richard Antwi Agyei was allegedly assaulted by police officers. The deceased, who had been arrested during the raid, was later pronounced dead on arrival at the Yamfo Health Centre after allegedly being tortured by police officers for refusing to pay a demanded GHC1,500.
According to Nana Ameyaw, the deceased had already paid GHC1,000 via mobile money but was unable to pay the remaining amount, which allegedly led to his death.
ACP Gyebi Richard, the Deputy Ahafo Regional Police Commander, assured that the matter would be thoroughly investigated to ensure justice is served.
Residents of Yamfo expressed sorrow over the loss, describing Richard Antwi Agyei as a hardworking and dedicated young man who tragically lost his life due to the alleged police brutality.
