Naming your newborn baby is a huge decision and can sometimes feel like a daunting task.
Some parents choose their tot’s names in an heartbeat, taking inspiration from family members or sentimental meanings, while others end up stumped right up until the baby arrives. But sometimes, not everyone will end up liking your decision.
One woman shared how she felt ‘disappointed’ and ‘angry’ when her sister failed to name her newborn child after her – and said their decision felt like a ‘slap in the face.’ Her sister and her partner revealed they would ‘honour someone special in their lives’ leading her to think they would share the same name as her niece. However, she was left in a fit of rage when they instead chose to call her Athena.
Taking Reddit to rant, she said: “They actually strung me around by telling me her was a secret and was in honour of someone special. I had every reason to think it was my name. They named her Athena which makes zero sense because they’re not even Greek. It’s a major slap in the face.” She confessed she told the couple never to contact her again unless they rectified their mistake.
She said: “I was so angry that I told them both that they got my hopes up and were going to acknowledge everything I’ve done for them and do not contact me until they make it right. To add insult to injury me and my sister are twins so it’s pretty obvious you name your firstborn after your twin.”
The post quickly sparked debate. One user commenting under the post, said: “Your sister isn’t obligated to name her baby after you, twin or no twin. You’ve given your twin and her husband an ultimatum to not contact you until they make this right? You don’t throw things you’ve done to someone in their face and hand out ultimatums.”
Another person added: “While it is common to name babies after family, I think it would be pretty confusing because the mother and op are twins so I’m gonna assume they’re close, so it may become quite confusing when the daughter is old enough to talk/understand. If the 2 of them are in the same place and someone calls the name etc.
