Winfried Schäfer deserves Black Stars coaching job instead of technical advisor role – Osei Kweku Palmer

-

Former Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Wilfred Osei Kweku Palmer, has criticized the appointment of Winfried Schäfer as the technical advisor for the Black Stars.

Schäfer, a German coach known for leading Cameroon to victory in the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has been named the technical advisor for the Black Stars and the technical director of the GFA.

The appointment is part of the GFA’s strategy to strengthen the national team’s technical setup ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which resume in March, following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON under Otto Addo.

However, Osei Kweku Palmer believes Schäfer should have been appointed as the head coach rather than taking on an advisory role.

“Winfried Schäfer should have been appointed as Black Stars coach rather than an advisor to Otto Addo,” he stated in an interview with Akoma FM.

Ghana is set to face Chad and Madagascar in the fifth and sixth rounds of the World Cup qualifiers.
