Winfried Schäfer arrives in Ghana to begin Black Stars technical advisory role

-

Winfried Schäfer, the newly appointed technical advisor of the Black Stars, has arrived in Ghana as preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers intensify.

The experienced German coach, who led Cameroon to victory in the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), touched down on Monday and was received by Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Ofei.

Schäfer’s appointment is part of the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) strategy to bolster the national team’s technical setup following their failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON under Otto Addo.

The GFA is keen on ensuring Ghana secures a spot in its fifth World Cup, set to be hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Beyond his advisory role, Schäfer will also serve as the technical director of the GFA, bringing over four decades of coaching experience to the national setup.

Meanwhile, newly appointed team psychologist Kris Perquy and video analyst Gregory De Grauwe are expected to arrive in Ghana in the coming days.

The Black Stars will resume their World Cup qualifying campaign next month with crucial fixtures against Chad and Madagascar on Matchdays five and six.
