Former Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, has reacted to comments made by New Patriotic Party(NPP) General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua that their humiliating defeat in the December 2024 general elections was due to spiritual influence.
According to Fatimatu, Mr. Kodua, as the party’s chief scribe, should not have made such a statement.
“He is the party’s CEO and general scribe, so how could he say it was spiritual?” she asked.
Mr. Kodua had claimed that there were inexplicable occurrences on the day of the election that suggested a spiritual dimension to the outcome.
He highlighted the unusually low voter turnout among NPP supporters across the country, a situation he believes cannot be explained by conventional means.
However, Fatimatu disagreed in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show.
“The committee’s report is not even out, and we haven’t started our work, so why make such a statement about the committee? It’s not necessary,” she stated.
She pointed out that Mr. Kodua was also part of the people who formed the committee to investigate the loss, questioning, “Why would you say it was spiritual when you are part of the committee?”
Fatimatu stressed the importance of leaders remaining strong in times of difficulty.
“People look up to us, and when we are broken, we should be strong,” she said.
She further noted that if Mr. Kodua had avoided such commentary and waited for the committee to do its job, it would have been more helpful.
“I didn’t expect Justin Kodua to say our heavy defeat in the election was a spiritual issue. We should avoid some of these statements,” she concluded.
