Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has attributed the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to their inability to secure victories in home matches.
The team concluded their qualification campaign with three defeats and three draws, earning just three points to finish fourth in their group. This disappointing performance cost them a spot at the tournament scheduled to take place in Morocco next year.
Speaking to Asempa FM’s Ul, Asante Twum highlighted that the team’s struggles at home played a significant role in their failed qualification bid.
“Losing to Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium was the genesis of the Black Stars’ problems in the qualifiers because playing away was always going to be difficult. I was shocked when we lost, and I told some people at the FA, including the coach [Otto Addo], that this would come back to haunt us,” he explained.
He further noted, “We were hoping to bounce back against Sudan, and it did not work. The same against Sudan in the doubleheader. We failed to take advantage of our home games, and that was a major factor and setback as to why we could not qualify for the AFCON.”
Ghana’s campaign began with a 1-0 loss to Angola, followed by a 1-1 draw against Niger. In a doubleheader against Sudan, the team failed to score in a goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium before losing 2-0 in the return leg. They later drew 1-1 with Angola in Luanda and concluded with a 2-1 defeat to Niger in their final group game.
With the AFCON dream now out of reach, the Black Stars will shift their focus to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, set to resume in March 2025.
