Why Nollywood is restricted, not gaining global acceptance – Genevieve Nnaji

-

Genevieve Nnaji has revealed the major problem restricting Nollywood movies from gaining global acceptance.

The actress while speaking on CNN where she spoke on her Netflix acquired film, ”Lion Heart,” said language is the major barrier preventing Nollywood from going global.

She also identified lack of funds for movies as one of the challenges of the movie industry.

When asked on why Nollywood movies have not been recognised globally, Genevieve said: ”For the money, we had to self-fund unfortunately for movies. We don’t have adequate funding for movies that we actually intend to go global, there isn’t that provision yet.

“Nollywood stands a good chance of going global anytime soon, but language is the only problem that stands as a barrier as we all identify with culture, pain.”

On why her movie ‘Lion Heart’ was acquired by Netflix, Genevieve added, “I think the authenticity of the story which was what I loved about it. It provided an environment where I could showcase the things that made me proud of our culture, our talent, and our values. We focused on quality this time.

”Lion Heart” is the first original film from Nigeria to be owned by the American movie streaming platform ‘Netflix’.
