Former OGC Nice and Aduana Stars striker Yahaya Mohammed has expressed concerns over the lack of appeal in the Ghana Premier League, which he believes is deterring potential sponsors.
The country’s top-flight league is currently without a major sponsor after betPawa pulled out midway through last season.
In an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, the former Asante Kotoko player shared his view that the league’s declining attractiveness is a key reason corporate sponsors are hesitant to invest.
“The Ghana Premier League at this moment is not attractive. During my days, sponsors were chasing the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to sponsor the league, and I remember that Coca-Cola was even interested in sponsoring the GHALCA Top Four tournament,” he said.
Mohammed added that poor television coverage and limited financial incentives make the league less appealing, with some players now opting for leagues in countries like Rwanda and Ethiopia, where they receive better financial rewards.
“Today, sponsors are not interested because the Premier League is unattractive. Players are interested in playing in Rwanda and Ethiopia because of the better incentives they will receive, unlike what they would earn by playing in the Ghana Premier League.
“The television coverage for the league is not good enough, and all these things push away the corporate world from investing in and sponsoring the Premier League,” he added.
Despite these challenges, the Ghana Premier League continues, with Matchday 10 games scheduled to take place at various stadiums this weekend as the 2024/25 season progresses.
