Why does the EC want to burn GH¢443m on Voters Register? Muntaka wonders

National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for the Asawase Constituency has cautioned the Electoral Commission (EC) to tread cautiously on its decision to compile a new Voters Register.

Hon Muntaka Mubarak was of the view that the budget for the new register could be invested in other areas for development.

“We cannot let such huge monies down the drain when we have free Senior High School, water, market and roads that can give to the people, why do you want to burn the money?” He quizzed.

Speaking on Nhyira FM’s Kuro Yi Mu Nsem, Hon Muntaka cautioned the EC to brace themselves for the real challenges of their time.

He said the EC should wait for the completion of the Ghana Card registration and co-marry the data with existing register since the election is in December.

The Electoral Commission (EC) last week stressed the need for the compilation of new voters register despite the resistance from some opposition parties.

According to the EC, the exercise is not a waste of resources and necessary for the upcoming general election.

The EC in its quest to compile a new Voters Register said it is committed to judiciously spending the about GH¢443 million it was granted by Parliament to be spent on the process.
