Why Bawumia’s staff are vying to become MPs – Ofosu Ampofo reveals

-

A former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has revealed why majority of staff of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia are running for parliamentary elections.

According to him, it is an indication that, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is uncertain about its prospects in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

During the campaign launch of the campaign of Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Upper Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region, Dr Ofosu Ampofo highlighted that prominent figures close to Dr Bawumia, including his sister, his economic affairs advisor, and his spokesperson, Dr Gideon Boako, are all contesting for parliamentary positions.

He interpreted this move as a sign of the NPP’s lack of confidence in their electoral success and a strategic attempt to secure as many seats as possible in the face of potential challenges should they go into opposition.

“How do people who are walking with the Vice President and working in his office, all of a sudden, change their minds and contest as MPs?” Ofosu Ampofo questioned.

“If you truly believe your presidential candidate is going to win the election, why abandon your special position to seek a parliamentary seat? This is a clear indication that even those closest to Dr Bawumia do not have confidence in his chances of becoming President,” he added.

He further argued that the actions of the NPP as a party reveal their acknowledgement of the NDC’s likely victory.

“The NPP itself knows that John Dramani Mahama will win the next elections, so they are looking for positions where they can remain relevant in opposition.”
