WHO to convene experts amid rising monkeypox cases in Africa

-

The World Health Organization (WHO) will on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, convene an emergency committee meeting over the upsurge of Monkeypox.

WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced this in a post on X.

Mr Ghebreyesus noted the committee will assess whether the escalating spread of the M-pox virus in Africa warrants a global emergency declaration,

He emphasised the urgency of the situation, noting the increasing number of cases reported beyond the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Mpox, formerly called monkeypox, is a viral infection transmitted through close contact.

Initial symptoms include fever, headaches, swellings, back pain, aching muscles, which can develop into a rash.

WHO declared a public health emergency over an outbreak of mpox in 2022.

Although this ended last year, low levels of cases are still being reported in some countries.
