Not many people expected a film about a 10-year-old boy who battles two bumbling burglars to become a massive success and holiday staple, but a lot of it is due to the incredible cast.
Released in 1990, Home Alone went on to bank $285.8 million in the US and Canada, and another $190.9 million in other countries against a budget of $18 million, making for a huge profit.
The classic film also launched a then unknown child actor, Macaulay Culkin, into one of the biggest stars in the world and helped his costars land even more roles.
The movie’s success led to another sequel starring Macaulay, and four more- albeit less successful- films with other lead actors.
Now more than 30 years after the original’s release, let’s see what the cast is up to these day.
MACAULAY CULKIN
After Home Alone’s giant success, a then 10-year-old Macaulay was one of the most sought after actors, landing roles in other films including My Girl, The Good Son, The Pagemaster, Richie Rich, and he even found himself working with Michael Jackson.
After tying the knot with Rachel Miner at age 18 and parting ways in 2002, the actor was seen less and less in roles, eventually dating Mila Kunis for eight years in a romance they kept private.
Macaulay was in the spotlight again in 2017 when he started dating Disney actress Brenda Song– the pair would welcome a son, Dakota, in April 2021.
The now 41-year-old was most recently seen acting in the latest American Horror Story season.
CATHERINE O’HARA
The seasoned actress wasn’t exactly an unknown before appearing in Home Alone, as she had already had roles in numerous films including the classic Michael Keaton-led movie Beetlejuice.
However, plenty more roles came soon after including in Wyatt Earp, Best in Show, Orange County, and A Mighty Wind.
Catherine would then land a role as Moira Rose in the critically acclaimed series Schitt’s Creek, which ended up winning her an Emmy for outstanding lead actress.
The 67-year-old has been married to Bo Welch since 1992 and they share two kids.
JOE PESCI
The iconic actor’s comedic turn as Harry in Home Alone came as a shock to many as just two months earlier he had played the vicious and violent Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas- which landed him an Oscar.
However, Joe would try his hand again at comedy with My Cousin Vinny, Lethal Weapon 3, and the Home Alone sequel before returning to his roots with Casino.
The star dropped out of the spotlight for some time before making quite the return in Martin Scorsese’s c2019 film The Irishman, a role that got him an Oscar nomination.
Joe, 78, shares one child with his ex-wife Claudia Haro.
DANIEL STERN
Daniel has quite the lengthy Hollywood resume, which includes being the narrator of The Wonder Years series until 1993.
After Home Alone, he found himself in plenty of roles on the big and small screen, with pit stops on Hey Arnold! Family Guy, Workaholics, and Angie Tribeca.
Most recently he has a regular role on Saturday Night Live comic Aidy Bryant‘s series Shrill.
Daniel, 64, shares three kids with wife Laure Mattos.
KIERAN CULKIN
While Macaulay’s younger brother had his first role in Home Alone, he would continue acting and appear in other notable films including Father of the Bride and its sequel, She’s All That, The Cider House Rules, and Iggy Goes Down.
Kieran is now on HBO’s popular series Succession, which has earned him various award nominations.
The actor, 39, also got to host SNL recently.
JOHN HEARD
John had quite the film resume before the 1990 family film, and it only got longer afterwards.
He would appear in various movies including The Pelican Brief, Snake Eyes, Pollock, and would also snag a role on The Sopranos.
Sadly, John passed away in 2017 at the age of 71 after suffering cardiac arrest. He is survived by his three kids.
DEVIN RATRAY
While he will also be known for playing Buzz on Home Alone, Devin has continued to snag roles in everything from The Prince and Me to Hustlers.
He also reprised his classic role in 2021’s Home Sweet Home Alone.
JOHN CANDY
The iconic comedic actor was already a household name before Home Alone came along, with appearances in everything from Little Shop of Horrors, Spaceballs, and Planes, Trains & Automobiles.
John appeared in other notable films after the 1990 classic, however his final role would be in Canadian Bacon as he passed away due to a heart attack in 1994. He was 43.
He is survived by two kids who he shared with wife Rosemary Margaret Hobor.
