A private legal practitioner and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Constituency, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has expressed his concerns over Attorney General (AG) Dr. Dominic Ayine’s recent decision to discontinue a series of high-profile cases involving individuals accused of causing financial loss to the state.
Several of these cases have been dismissed under the new John Mahama administration, sparking widespread controversy.
In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Baffour Awuah questioned the AG’s actions.
“When he was sworn into office, was he given the task to review cases of this magnitude? If he reviewed these cases to determine the outcome, then he deserves an award,” he said.
The MP also raised doubts about the speed with which the AG has dismissed these cases. “How long did it take him to decide that these cases can’t be prosecuted?” he asked, emphasizing that some of these cases were long-standing due to their complexity, not the fault of previous administrations.
“As AG, you have the power to file nolle prosequi and withdraw charges, but it must be done with much attention and thorough work.”
He cited the case involving the newly appointed Bank of Ghana Governor, asking why the charges were dropped after the individual had been convicted alongside others.
Mr. Baffour Awuah also expressed concerns about the perception that the AG’s office may now be selectively prosecuting cases.
“People may start to think that this AG is only prosecuting NDC cases. Leaders must be careful because it will be difficult to achieve the deterrence we need,” he said.
