What did you see? –  Political scientist asks Bawumia over 50-ministerial team

-

Political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante has expressed shock at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s promise to cap the number of ministers and deputy ministers to 50 should he become President.

He wonders what Dr. Bawumia saw when he is part of a government with more than 50 ministers.

“I really want to know what he saw to have a change of mind. We have been talking about this for a long time but they never listened, so what changed now?” he quizzed.

Dr. Asah-Asante made this known in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Thursday after Dr. Bawumia lecturer on his vision for Ghana if elected President in December.

Stressing the importance of efficiency in governance, Dr. Bawumia said having a smaller ministerial team would streamline decision-making processes.

But Dr. Asah-Asante said the number is too much as he would prefer just 19 ministers, with chief directors taking over rather than having deputy ministers, which would be a burden on the state coffers.

He questioned what the 50 people would do, stating that the deputy ministers don’t do anything.

Dr. Asah-Asante added that, even Western countries do not use a lot of people for ministerial roles and wondered how developing countries would have so many ministers.
