President-elect John Dramani Mahama has arrived at the Jubilee House to officially begin Ghana’s government transition process following his victory in the 2024 presidential election.
The invitation for the transition meeting was extended by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo shortly after the Electoral Commission declared the election results.
The meeting marks the commencement of the official transfer of power to the incoming administration.
Upon welcoming Mr. Mahama and his vice president-elect, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, President Akufo-Addo warmly congratulated them on their victory.
“Mr. President, congratulations. It was a well-fought fight,” he remarked to Mr. Mahama.
Turning to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, he added, “Historic lady, congratulations. Well done,” recognizing her groundbreaking achievement as Ghana’s first female vice president-elect.
In compliance with the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845), Mr. Mahama has announced a ten-member transition team to facilitate the handover process.
The team will work closely with the outgoing administration to ensure a smooth and efficient transfer of responsibilities.
The swearing-in ceremony for President-elect Mahama is scheduled for January 7, 2025. His election victory was decisive, securing 56.55% of the total valid votes, as announced by the Electoral Commission.
His closest rival, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party, garnered 41.61%.
This transition underscores Ghana’s commitment to democracy and sets the stage for the next chapter under John Dramani Mahama’s leadership.
