The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has dismissed claims by the Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr Emmanuel Akwetey, suggesting threats to take control of the country if electoral violence escalated beyond the capacity of the Ghana Police Service.
In a statement, GAF noted Dr Akwetey cited a press conference held in 2016 and 2020.
However, GAF has clarified that it has never held a press conference, declaring such intentions, nor does it have any plans to stage a coup.
The statement emphasised that GAF’s role is to support the Ghana Police Service when assistance is requested, which should not be construed as an intention to overthrow the government.
The Force has therefore reiterated its commitment to upholding the democratic process and resisting any attempts, by individuals or groups, to unlawfully seize power.
GAF has also called on civil society organizations(CSOs) and the media to avoid using its name in ways that could inflame political tensions.
Meanwhile, GAF says it looks forward to a peaceful election on December 7 and cautioned against associating the military with actions that could exacerbate political tensions in the country.
