The Twafohene of Denkyira Kyekyewere, Nana Ntow Yirenkyi has vowed that the traditional authorities will resist any attempts to remove Anthony Sarpong as the Acting Commissioner of the Ghana Revenue Authority(GRA).
Speaking on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen, Nana Yirenkyi declared that Mr Sarpong has the utmost support of the chiefs and any form of intimidation will not be tolerated.
“He has served in the NDC in the Central region. The NDC bigwigs know him likewise President Mahama. We will also mass up and face them in the coming days if they do not stop misbehaving because it is not nice,” he stated.
His comment comes after group of discontented youth, purportedly linked to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stormed the GRA headquarters in Accra on Monday, opposing Mr Sarpong’s appointment.
Mr Sarpong, a seasoned accountant and auditor, formerly served as a Senior Partner at KPMG, a globally renowned auditing and consulting firm was appointed on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
Despite his impressive credentials, his nomination has been met with disapproval by some National Democratic Congress(NDC) who have questioned his political affiliation.
However, Nana Yirenkyi has said the action of the youth must be condemned in no uncertain terms, stating not all NDC supporters can be front liners.
Citing himself, the chief disclosed he was an NDC Communications Officer in the Upper Denkyira East constituency.
He emphasised that aside Mr Sarpong’s appointment as GRA boss, he is also part of the 7-member National Economic Dialogue (NED) Planning Committee.
“We are destroying the party with our actions because it seems if someone is not popular like Sammy Gyamfi, Eric Adjei or Basintale, we cannot give them appointments. Is that what we are saying?
“Did we ever see the former GRA bosses; Amishaddai and Julie Essiam on any stage campaigning for NPP? So the GRA work is meant for technocrats and not just anybody. He has risen through the ranks and now a senior partner at KPMG. He is on the level of Bright Simons, Eric Nipah, Franklin Cudjoe so it is not every job that requires a die-hard NDC member,” he stated.
He cautioned the youth to exercise restraint and allow President John Mahama to work peacefully.
