Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has reiterated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is a peaceful party and will not respond to any “lawlessness” of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
This comes after NDC Members of Parliament occupied the Majority side of the House which is originally for the NPP MPs.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, the Effutu MP assured that they would not engage in actions that could disrupt the nation’s peace.
“The NPP has a tradition of being law-abiding. Our forebearers have always been peaceful, and we want to inform the public that we will not provide the lawlessness platform the NDC seeks. We care about innocent Ghanaians, including those in business and academia, and while we recognize the political landscape, we will conduct ourselves civilly,” he said.
The NPP MPs have resumed their offices as they await the Speaker of Parliament to recall a sitting.
The Speaker, Alban Bagbin, had earlier declared four parliamentary seats vacant, making the NDC the Majority in the House.
However, the NPP MPs challenged the Speaker’s decision in the Supreme Court, filing an ex-parte motion to stay execution of the declaration.
Both parties now await the Speaker’s next move following the Supreme Court ruling, while each side continues to claim the status of the Majority caucus in Parliament.
