We will call for a re-balloting if… – PNC pushes for Supreme Court ruling over Mornah’s disqualification

-

The National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Asaki Samson Awingobit, has revealed the party’s next steps following the dismissal of an application by its flagbearer, Bernard Mornah.

Mr. Mornah had challenged his disqualification from contesting in the 2024 presidential election by the Electoral Commission (EC).

A High Court in Accra, on Monday, October 21, 2024, ruled that the EC’s disqualification of Mornah was lawful.

Speaking on the issue in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Mr. Awingobit stated that the PNC, with the help of their legal team, is working hard to ensure that justice is served.

He indicated that, the party will push the case to the Supreme Court.

“We are trying hard with the help of our lawyers to ensure that the right thing is done,” Awingobit said.

He stressed that if the Supreme Court rules in their favor, the PNC will insist on a reballoting for the presidential election.

“If the Supreme Court rules in our favor, we will have no option but to call for a reballoting. We won’t compromise on it. It is a very legitimate demand,” he emphasized.

Mr. Awingobit also expressed confidence in the legal process, stating, “Our lawyers are putting things in place, and we are coming with clean hands. We believe the Supreme Court will deliver justice.”

In the High Court ruling, presiding judge His Lordship Justice Richard Apietu dismissed Bernard Mornah’s application for certiorari, stating that the EC’s actions were lawful.

The court issued no order as to costs, considering the constitutional nature of the matter.

Mr. Mornah had asked the court for an order of mandamus to compel the Electoral Commission to declare him as a duly nominated candidate for the 2024 presidential election.

He had also sought an order restraining the EC from printing the presidential ballot papers or proceeding with the December 7 election until his candidacy was confirmed.
