The former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has opened up about the party’s unexpected defeat in the 2024 general elections.
He stated that, the loss has left the party struggling to recover.
“We were beaten by the rain, and it’s not easy to recover fully from such a knockout defeat,” Mr. Blay said in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday.
He admitted that, the outcome came as a surprise, particularly given the challenges and opposition the government faced during the campaign.
“I never believed we would lose, especially with the difficulties and the challenges the government was facing. I thought Ghanaians would understand, but the defeat came unexpectedly,” he added.
He described the result as a “big mind-boggling” moment, but added that in politics, such outcomes are part of the game and offer valuable lessons.
“We’ve learned a hard lesson, and while it’s a tough blow, we’ll pick up the pieces and regroup. It could happen to any politician. No one is immune to defeat” he noted.
The former NPP chair reflected on the party’s performance, noting that despite the economic hardships, the NPP’s campaign had been strong, especially with improvements in the economy by the third quarter of the year.
However, he acknowledged that the party had taken certain things for granted, which ultimately contributed to their loss.
“We did a lot during the campaign and believed we were on the right track, but unfortunately, the results didn’t reflect that. We will focus on the things we took for granted and come back stronger” he stated.
Despite the defeat, Mr. Blay remains hopeful, stating that the NPP will bounce back and continue to fight for its place in Ghana’s political landscape.
