Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Afenyo-Markin, has emphasized the need for competent individuals to be appointed as Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
Speaking on the delayed nomination of MMDCEs, he questioned why the Minister for Local Government had not expedited the process.
“A Local Government Minister has been in office for about three weeks, so what is causing the delay in nominating the MMDCEs? What is stopping them? But of course, we need to get qualified candidates and not people who have not even been to primary school to become an MCE. I am not sure the people will be happy about that,” he stated.
He stressed the need for competent leadership at the local government level.
“In Effutu, for instance, there are concerns about the qualifications of candidates being put forward. The community needs a competent person to serve as the MCE.
“Governance is not child’s play. We need individuals with minimum qualifications, development-oriented mindsets, and the requisite skills to assist in governance,” he added.
