Team Manager of the Black Stars, Ameenu Shardow, has expressed regret following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), admitting that the team has let the nation down.
The senior national team’s campaign ended in disappointment, finishing at the bottom of Group F with just three points and no wins from six matches.
Their qualification hopes were dashed after a 1-1 draw against Angola in Luanda last Friday and a 2-1 defeat to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday.
Reacting to the underwhelming performance, Shardow admitted in an interview with Happy FM that the outcome was painful and a major letdown for Ghanaians.
“We have let Ghanaians down by failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON),” he told Happy FM.
“It hurts because I can’t even go home because my family is hurt like I am.”
“We have disappointed the country, and it hurts that we could not qualify for the tournament,” he added.
Ghana’s struggles in the qualifiers began with a 1-0 home defeat to Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium, followed by a 1-1 draw with Niger in Berkane. In a doubleheader against Sudan, the team managed a goalless draw in Accra but suffered a 2-0 loss in the return leg in Libya.
The Black Stars’ failure to secure a place in AFCON 2025 marks a significant blow to the team’s reputation, sparking widespread disappointment among fans and officials alike.
