Former Ghanaian midfielder, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu is worried the Black Stars are gradually losing their identity on the global stage.
His comments came after the national team’s 1-1 draw against Niger in their second Group F match on Monday.
The result leaves Ghana in third place with just one point from two matches in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, as they chase their fifth continental title.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Agyemang-Badu, who was part of Ghana’s FIFA U-20 World Cup-winning squad, voiced his disappointment about the team’s decline.
“I am sad. We that still love the team and follow Ghana football, it is very sad for me,” he told Asempa FM‘s Sports Nite.
“The dangerous thing is that we are gradually losing our biggest identity in the world. Gradually we are losing it and it is very troublesome for us.
“Looking at the matches we have played, it looks like gradually the pattern of play for the national team is leaving or it is not there so we will plead with them to have a meeting with the senior players because where it is heading it is not good.
Agyemang-Badu reminisced about the past when Ghanaian fans had high expectations, believing the Black Stars would reach the final stages of tournaments.
“Some years back when we play qualifiers, Ghanaians don’t think about it. What they think about is that these players will reach the final or win the trophy so us. We left that and it came to finals, then to semis from semis then we came to quarterfinals and two times group stages now qualification is going to be problematic for us,” he added.
Ghana began its 2025 AFCON qualifiers with a 1-0 loss to Angola.
Coach Otto Addo and his team will be looking for their first win when they face Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan in a crucial doubleheader in October.
