We are hopeful Black Stars will perform in the next AFCON – Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe

Head of Public Relations and Strategy at the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe is optimistic about the Black Stars prospects in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The senior national team has struggled in recent AFCON tournaments, with early exits from the group stage in both Cameroon and Ivory Coast.

Despite these setbacks, the Black Stars are set to return to action in September, beginning their campaign in Group F with matches against Angola and Niger.

In an interview, Armstrong-Mortagbe expressed confidence in the team’s potential for improvement, highlighting their recent success in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers as a positive sign.

“We are on a journey. The last two AFCONs didn’t meet our expectations, but a decent performance at the 2022 World Cup gives us hope for better results, especially compared to our last AFCON showing,” he told ChannelOne TV.

He also praised Otto Addo, who took over after the 2023 AFCON, for implementing a strategic plan.

“Otto Addo came after that (2023) AFCON. He’s come in implementing a plan. From the last two World Cup qualifiers that we saw, we can see the beginnings of the shapings of a squad or a team that should be able to hold its own when it is that the best of Africa gather again next year,” he added.

Ghana will face Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 5 and then travel to play Niger in Berkane on September 9.
