The Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has expressed confidence in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) prospects of winning the legal battle over disputed parliamentary seats.
Speaking to the media after an Accra High Court adjourned proceedings on December 31, 2024, Afenyo-Markin reassured party supporters that due process would prevail, asserting that the NPP would retain the contested seats in four constituencies.
The Member of Parliament for Effutu dismissed claims of irregularities in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) redeclaration of the disputed seats, which were initially declared in favor of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“We have every patience for the law. A court process may be slow, but with surety, you will get results when you know you are on firm grounds. The Electoral Commission itself has emphasized that there is no such thing as a declaration of results in Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Ablekuma North, and Dome Kwabenya.
“They have already administratively declared those results as illegal, and the EC is doing its work. So, this argument that they have declared results is neither here nor there,” he stated.
Afenyo-Markin expressed optimism about the outcome, stating, “We firmly believe that, in the end, we will be victorious. There is no rush because we are following due process. Initially, they pursued a path of violence. At least now, we have managed to bring them to the courtroom, instill civility, and ensure they abide by the rule of law. That is our joy. This is the NPP—we believe in the rule of law and stand for doing the right thing. We are not worried at all.”
The Accra High Court is handling the NDC’s preliminary objection against the NPP’s mandamus application regarding the disputed constituencies of Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Ablekuma North, and Techiman South.
The court was scheduled to rule on December 31, 2024, but the decision has been adjourned to January 1, 2025.
