Residents in the Agortime-Ziope District and parts of the Adaklu District are expected to face dire water scarcity as Tordze, their main source of water, is reportedly polluted.
The Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) issued a press release communicating the incident of the pollution at Tove in the Republic of Togo.
It indicated that agrochemicals spilled from a truck into Tordze after it was involved in an accident on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
“It is essential to assess the level of contamination in the Tordze River and its adjoining water bodies in Ghana before declaring them safe for any human activity, including fishing,” stated the release signed by Augustus Awity, the Chief Director of the VRCC.

He, therefore, warned residents living along Tordze to desist from relying on the river for “drinking, fishing, irrigation, or washing” until the safety of the water is ascertained.
However, municipal and district assemblies have been directed to serve the affected areas with water in the interim while efforts are being made to resolve the issues and make the water fit for human consumption.
