The Dordoe Korpe lorry station in the Krachi Nchumuru district of the Oti Region is grappling with severe waste accumulation, prompting significant concerns about environmental health and community well-being.
The riverbank, which serves as a waiting area for commuters, is overwhelmed with plastic waste, discarded food items, and other debris, posing a serious threat to both the ecosystem and public health.
Adom News, during a visit to the area, observed that the busy lorry station has become a hotspot for littering, as passengers frequently leave behind food wrappers and other refuse while waiting for transport.
Commuters, traders, and drivers at the station have expressed frustration over the deteriorating sanitation conditions, citing what they perceive as inaction from local authorities.
They have placed the blame for the current state of the riverbank on neglect by the district assembly and waste management company, Zoomlion.
The station’s stakeholders are calling for immediate action, urging the assembly to take responsibility by implementing effective waste disposal measures.
Drivers and food vendors, in particular, are advocating for more waste bins and regular cleaning services, which they believe would significantly improve the area’s cleanliness.
In an effort to address the growing crisis, they are calling for a collaborative approach to waste management and environmental protection, urging local authorities to prioritize these initiatives.
The goal is not only to improve sanitation but also to restore the Dambai River to its former state for the benefit of the entire community.
