Walewale curfew: MP appeals for revocation over negative impact

-

The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr. Tia Abdul Kabiru Mahama, has appealed to the Minister for the Interior to revoke the curfew imposed on the town, citing its negative impact on the community.

The curfew, enforced a few weeks ago by the Ministers for the Interior and Defence, restricts movement from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily.

Dr. Mahama argued that Walewale is not a security zone and, therefore, the directive should be lifted.

He described the curfew as a “collective punishment” for crimes the community did not commit.

The legislator suggested that instead of restricting movement, the government should focus on addressing the root causes of the conflict, such as poverty and unemployment, to find a lasting solution.

Other MPs have also backed the call for revocation.

Meanwhile, Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Asiamah, has directed the Ministers for the Interior and Defence to appear before Parliament to brief the House on the issue.

This development signals the government’s willingness to engage in dialogue and address the concerns of the affected community.
