WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship: We are targeting AFCON qualification – Desmond Ofei

-

Black Satellites coach, Desmond Ofei says he is focused on securing a spot in the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following his team’s advancement to the semifinals of the ongoing 2024 WAFU Zone U-20 Championship.

Ghana’s U-20 squad reached the semifinals after a 1-1 draw against Togo on Wednesday afternoon.

Jerry Afriyie opened the scoring for Ghana with a well-placed finish from a Misbau Aziz pass, marking his third goal of the tournament.

However, Togo’s Ouzeroudine Kperedja, a standout from EurAfrica Academy, equalized, resulting in a draw.

After the match, Ofei expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance and reaffirmed their goal of qualifying for the CAF youth championship next year.

“We are very happy. I think the first target in every tournament is to reach the semifinals, and we have achieved that. Now, our focus is on the semis,” he stated.

Ofei also acknowledged Togo’s strong performance, noting the match’s challenges.

“I want to congratulate Togo. They fought really hard. Our boys also worked hard, and we are very happy to be in the semis. Today’s game was tough, and Togo played very well. It was a tactical battle, but in the end, we secured the qualification, so we are pleased,” he added.

The Black Satellites will find out their semifinal opponents later today after the final round of Group B matches.
