WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship: Desmond Ofei commends Black Satellites despite final loss to Nigeria

-

Black Satellites coach Desmond Ofei has praised his team’s efforts despite their 2-1 loss to Nigeria in the WAFU Zone B U-20 Cup of Nations final held in Lome, Togo, on Wednesday night.

The Flying Eagles took a commanding lead with two goals in the first half. Although Jerry Afriyie netted one for the Satellites in the second half, it wasn’t enough to secure victory.

Despite the defeat, Ofei expressed satisfaction with the team’s achievement of qualifying for next year’s U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“Losing nine key players who played vital roles in our success at the African Games was a tough setback. However, this challenge allowed us to cultivate a new group of talented young players who have risen to the occasion. They truly deserve this qualification,” Ofei remarked after the match.

“Reaching the U-20 AFCON is a remarkable accomplishment for us, especially given the obstacles we faced. The determination and commitment displayed by this team have been exceptional, and I take great pride in each one of them.”

Looking ahead, Ofei is focused on preparing his squad for AFCON, marking the Black Satellites’ return to the continental competition for the first time since their triumph in 2021.
