WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship: Black Satellites secure AFCON qualification after come back win against Cote D’voire

-

The Black Satellites of Ghana have qualified for the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a thrilling comeback win over Côte d’Ivoire in the semi-finals of the WAFU B U20 Championship on Sunday, October 27, 2024.

The Ghana U-20 team, led by coach Desmond Ofei, secured the qualification by defeating the Ivorians 2-1 at the Stade Municipal.

Despite falling behind early to a goal from Konan Loukou, Ghana managed to level the score with a deflected corner just before halftime.

In the second half, top scorer Jerry Afriyie, who has netted four goals in the tournament, clinched the comeback win by converting a superbly taken penalty.

Ofei’s squad held firm for the remainder of the match to seal their place in the final, where they will face either Nigeria or Niger.

With this victory, the Black Satellites have not only advanced to the WAFU B U20 final but also secured their qualification for the 2025 U-20 AFCON.

This marks a return to the continental competition for Ghana, who last won the title in 2021 under coach Abdul Karim Zito.

The 2025 U-20 AFCON will also serve as the African qualifiers for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, with the top four teams earning a spot in the global tournament.
