Voters exhibition: Why are people checking details via shortcode being charged? – EC asked

-

South Dayi Member of Parliament(MP), Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has raised concerns over a GH₵0.50 fee being charged voters verifying their details in the Electoral Commission (EC) ongoing exhibition exercise through a short code.

As part of the exercise which started today, August 20, 2024, the EC has introduced the short code *71151# as an alternative means for voters to conveniently check their details.

But in a post on X, Mr Dafeamekpor questioned the reason for the charge, seeking answers on where the money will go to.

The lawmaker emphasised that Parliament has already approved the budget for the exercise.

“Why is the Electoral Commission levying a fee of GH₵0.50 on every registered voter before they can check their name in the provisional register using the shortcode 71151#? Who is getting these monies?” he asked.

He argued that citizens should not be required to pay additional fees to verify their names in the voter register, even if the process is conducted electronically.
