There was a violent clash between past and newly elected executives of the Ghana Private Road Transport Users Association (GPRTU) in the Volta Region on Monday morning in Ho.
National Executives arrived in the region to swear in the executives of Ho Branch 2, who were elected in April 2022.
However, the swearing-in ceremony turned violent when the outgoing leaders attempted to block access to the secretariat, housed in a two-storey building.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) reported that the previous leadership had sought an injunction on the elections and managed to retain power for over two years, appealing the case as far as the Court of Appeal.
On Wednesday, despite the presence of police, the ousted executives resisted the handover and locked up the offices.
The Regional Police Command intervened, and after a meeting with both factions and the national executives, the five new executives were eventually sworn in.
Rolex Miheso, Welfare Chairman of the Tudu Lorry Park and representative of the National Executive Council of the GPRTU, delivered a dismissal letter to the previous executives. He then proceeded to swear in the newly elected officials: Dickson Dzogbatse as Chairman, Attipoe Lawrence as Vice Chairman, Godwin Tay as Secretary, and Wisdom Kpor and Christian Doe as Trustee and Second Trustee, respectively.
Miheso read out the results of the 2022 elections before administering the oaths of office and secrecy. He emphasized the need for a smooth transition and a united front to support the growth of the Union and transport service.
The new Branch Chairman pledged to foster peace and cooperation and to revitalize operations to enhance efficiency on the Ho to Accra route.
