VIDEO+PHOTOS: Danger looms as rainstorm exposes LPG station pipes at Pokuase

As residents of Pokuase, a suburb of Accra, count their losses after the rainstorms that have caused damage to properties and homes in Accra, they also live in fear of a possible gas explosion in the area.

This is because a gas filling station located at Pokuase-ACP Junction area which had cylinders waiting for re-fill or filled and waiting to be picked up by owners have been carried into the community by the floods.

Adomonline’s Gershon Mortey who was at the community also reports that several pipes and wires secluded for safety have been left bare by the rain, exposing residents and customers to danger.

According to an opinion leader of Pokuase Traditional Council, Nana Akyem Amponsah I, the area is prone to flooding because the activities of some residents has resulted in the choking of the main drain to the community.

According to him, attempts to prevent new residents from building along the drainage points have proved futile, exposing everybody to danger.

“We are lucky the gas pipes didn’t burst. Otherwise, the June 3 disaster will happen again. There were several wires and pipes that were uncovered by the rain. We plead with the government to come to our aid as some of the residents have built their houses on the drainage map”, he demanded.

Aviation Meteorology Inspector at the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Dr Steve Nyarkotey Quao says the eastern parts of the country could experience the highest rainfall as series of clouds continue to build up in the sea due to changes in temperature and humidity (monsoon) over the land.

“The month of June actually marks the onset of the monsoon rains”, he said.

And, if his words are anything to go by, authorities will have to quickly intervene before another disaster hits the country.
