It has emerged that most of the elders of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) against former President John Mahama’s re-election are just settling personal scores.
Former Ghana High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Emmanuel Victor Smith claimed ‘bitter comments’ by Ambassador Victor Gbeho, Ambassador Osei and others are just an opportunity to take their pound of flesh.

“Comments by Victor Gbeho and the others are just a collection of personal grievances but I wonder why they are trying to damage the goose the golden egg lay” he bemoaned.
President Mahama is very unpopular among elders of the NDC ahead of the party’s flagbearership elections.
Key amongst them is former Foreign Minister James Victor Gbeho who has asked NDC members to throw their weight behind people with good records and not those that led the party to lose the 2016 election miserably.

He believes former President John Mahama is not competent enough to lead the NDC to victory in the 2020 elections.
On the way forward, Ambassador Gbeho called on NDC loyalties to back the candidature of Professor Joshua Alabi, who he said has the character to rebuild the party and set it on course to win the 2020 presidential election.
But on Asempa FM’s Ekosii programme Thursday, Victor Smith expressed disappointment in Victor Gbeho.
In his view, as a member of the NDC Council of Elders, he should have made his concerns known privately and not publicly.
“When I heard Victor Gbeho’s comment about Mahama, I was very hurt so I called him because all the grievances are being taken care within the party” he bemoaned.

He maintained that, the NDC has a big opportunity to win the 2020 elections but such misguided comments by leading members could thwart it.
“We have a big chance to win, don’t spoil it. Let’s not destroy this opportunity with our bitterness”.
Ambassador Victor Smith said former President Mahama is the NDC’s best bet to win the 2020 general elections.
