Vetting Chaos: Special Committee to submit report to Speaker today

-

The Special Committee investigating the disturbances at the Appointments Committee is set to submit its report today, February 20, after receiving a one-week extension.

Initially given 10 days to complete its work, the committee requested additional time to finalize its findings.

Chaired by Ho West MP Emmanuel Kwesi Bedzrah, the committee’s mandate is to identify the MPs responsible for the disruptions that occurred during the vetting of ministerial nominees on January 30.

The report will guide Speaker Alban Bagbin on the next steps, including possible sanctions or a formal warning to deter future occurrences.

Background

Chaos erupted in Parliament during the vetting of ministerial nominees by the Appointments Committee on January 30, leading to property damage and the suspension of proceedings.

The incident drew widespread condemnation, prompting Speaker Bagbin to establish the committee to investigate and identify those responsible for the disturbances.

In response, the Speaker initially suspended four MPs—Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, and Jerry Ahmed Shaib—for their roles in the chaos.

However, the suspension was later revoked following an appeal from both the majority and minority leadership.
