The United Drivers Association in the Ashanti Region says vehicle owners are taking back their property following dwindling sales owing to recent fuel price hikes.
The union disclosed that the rising cost of fuel has rendered the commercial transport business non-profitable with the sector experiencing a near-collapse.
Prices of fuel have increased at some pump stations, with petrol selling at GHS 15.10 and diesel – GHS 15.25.
The incessant increase in fuel is impacting the commercial transport sector as some drivers record losses.
Spokesperson for the United Drivers Association – Ashanti Region, Eric Dadzie says some vehicle owners are repossessing their cars, leaving many drivers jobless.
“Many drivers have parked their cars not because of their bad attitude. The owners have taken their cars back. Maintenance is now expensive. The drivers are using their daily sales for fuel,” he said.
Some commuters are frustrated by the unending fuel price surge.
“How much are we earning as citizens that they must consistently increase fuel prices. It’s not as if they are increasing our salaries too. I spend 500 Ghana cedis on transport monthly. Government must do something. What’s the essence of the TOR?,” Amos Daneku, a commuter, said.
Meanwhile, the drivers’ union are ready to stage a political campaign against the government.
But until the cedi gains stability against the dollars, commuters and drivers will continue to bear the ripples of the fuel price hike.
