UTAG-UCC rejects termination of VC’s appointment, demands withdrawal of letter

The University of Cape Coast branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UCC) has expressed strong disapproval of the University Council’s decision to terminate the appointment of Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong as Vice-Chancellor.

UTAG-UCC contends that, the action taken by the Council Chair is unilateral and invalid, as it violates ongoing court proceedings that prevent the Chairman and Council from making such a decision.

“The letter from the Council Chair dated July 31, 2024, announcing the termination of the Vice-Chancellor’s renewed term, is inappropriate and baseless.

The allegations that the renewal breaches the University’s Statutes and the Constitution are without merit.

“The renewal process was conducted in full compliance with all legal and statutory requirements. Therefore, the Council Chair’s actions are arbitrary, capricious, and lack any legal foundation. We completely reject them.”

Prof. Boampong’s initial four-year term as Vice-Chancellor concluded on July 31, 2024, with his appointment allegedly extended for another two years. However, the Council Chair, Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, declared the extension null and void, stating that a final decision on the matter had not been made.

On Thursday, August 1, 2024, UTAG-UCC called on the Council Chair to retract the termination letter, accusing him of acting in bad faith and making unilateral decisions that undermine the university’s governance.

The Association urged the government to remove the Chairman from his position and assured the university community that it is closely monitoring the situation. UTAG-UCC vowed to take necessary actions to protect the institution’s integrity and the rights of its members.

The Association emphasized the importance of the University Council adhering strictly to the legal and statutory frameworks governing the university, warning that any actions contrary to these frameworks would be met with firm resistance to ensure justice and fairness.
