UNDP commends gov’t over proposed digitised toll system

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has commended the Mahama-led government’s decision to transition to electronic toll booths.

UNDP’s Resident Representative in Ghana, Niloy Banerjee, hailed the move as a game-changer in the fight against air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and ozone depletion.

In an interview with Adom News, Banerjee also emphasized the importance of shifting to electric vehicles, noting that a significant portion of emissions comes from traditional combustion engine vehicles.

He asserted that the adoption of electric vehicles will play a key role in reducing emissions and improving air quality in Ghana.

Mr. Banerjee expressed UNDP’s full support for the implementation of electronic tolls and the transition to electric vehicles, reflecting the organization’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection in Ghana.

He added that Ghana is making a significant stride toward sustainable transport and environmental protection with the reintroduction of road tolls, a decision that will be met with full support from the UNDP.

While the previous toll collection system posed health risks to workers, the new approach prioritizes technology to minimize these dangers.

The reintroduction of tolls will be implemented with a modern approach, using technology to ensure the safety and well-being of toll collectors.

This decision comes in the face of growing concerns over air pollution in Ghana, especially regarding the health risks road toll collectors face from prolonged exposure to vehicle emissions.
