The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has officially declared its support for the Organised Labour strike set to begin on October 10, following a majority vote.
In a poll conducted on October 8, UHAS faculty members overwhelmingly voted in favour of the strike, “Out of 262 eligible voters, 115 participated, yielding a 43% voter turnout. The results were as follows: Yes votes: 104 (90.4%), No votes: 11 (9.6%).”
This decisive result reflects UHAS-UTAG’s strong commitment to joining the nationwide industrial action, standing in solidarity with Organised Labour, and addressing critical national issues, including the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).
“Following NEC’s request for each branch to conduct a poll to determine whether UTAG should support a national strike calling for a ban on mining in forest reserves, farms, and rivers, UTAG-UHAS asked its Branch Independent Electoral Commission (BIEC) to oversee the voting process.
“The poll was conducted online via Google Forms on October 8, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Security measures were implemented to ensure the election was free and fair, preventing multiple votes and ensuring the integrity of the results.”
