The pick of matches on Tuesday come from Madrid and Lisbon, where Atletico Madrid host Bayer Leverkusen and Barcelona visit Benfica respectively.
Atletico have been in excellent form in recent weeks and will back themselves to win at home to Xabi Alonso’s Bundesliga champions – likely pushing themselves into the top eight of the standings, which earns an automatic spot in the Round of 16.
“Every game has been different and the team is responding to the situations we find ourselves in in these games. This reflects well on the team and let’s hope we can carry on showing this,” said Los Rojiblancos manager Diego Simeone.
As for Barca, they will chase a sixth win from seven in Europe: “It’s clear that the team stands together and is ready to give everything in every game,” said manager Hansi Flick. “We’re a bit like a family. The club is doing a lot of things right. We obviously have big goals, but we still have a long way to go.”
Tuesday also features Aston Villa visiting Monaco, Liverpool looking to keep up their perfect record when they host Lille at Anfield, and Juventus faces a tricky clash away to Club Brugge in Belgium.
Wednesday’s focus will fall on reigning European kings Real Madrid having a must-win clash at home to Salzburg, as well as a crunch match between Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City in the French capital.
“It’s still difficult to finish in the top eight, but we have two games left to earn points,” said Real manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Meanwhile, Citizens defender Ruben Dias spat some harsh truths after their loss to Juventus last month: “Essentially, when you don’t win it’s because you were not good enough. We did many good things, but that was not enough. Essentially, we have to be better both individually and collectively.”
Wednesday will also feature Celtic hosting Young Boys, as well as heavyweights Arsenal, Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Inter Milan battling Dinamo Zagreb, Feyenoord, Girona and Sparta Prague respectively.
