U.S. Ambassador reaffirms strong ties with Ghana amid 10% tariff concerns

U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, has reaffirmed the strong and enduring relationship between the United States and Ghana, despite concerns over a recently introduced 10% U.S. tariff on Ghanaian exports.

Her comments came after a closed-door meeting with Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, which lasted over an hour and focused on the economic and diplomatic implications of the new tariff.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Ambassador Palmer said the discussions were productive and reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to strengthening ties.

“I had a great conversation with the Minister for Foreign Affairs. We talked about the strength of the U.S.-Ghana relationship and ways to sustain and improve it. We also discussed the details of the tariff and how both countries can work together going forward,” she noted.

While acknowledging Ghana’s concerns, the Ambassador expressed hope that the country could still derive benefits from the new tariff arrangement compared to its competitors.

She emphasized that both nations are determined to continue dialogue and deepen cooperation in the face of trade policy shifts.
