After 15 years of Twitter users begging for an edit button with little success, it took about 15 minutes for the social media company to make a U-turn – once its newest shareholder Elon Musk posted a poll asking if users wanted it.
The website has never had the option to edit tweets, meaning users are forced to delete posts, leave typos up or – in some cases – claim they were hacked.
Twitter has finally announced the edit button is coming, saying it has nothing to do with Musk as they’ve been working on it for a year.
But this lot – including the billionaire SpaceX owner – probably wished they had had it years ago when they tweeted these blunders . . .
Ed Miliband
Former Labour leader Ed Miliband proved how a simple one-letter typo could change the entire meaning of his intended tribute to TV host Bob Holness with this clanger in 2012.
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian blamed “sleep deprivation” for her misspelling of Giorgio Armani when the brand called her out on Twitter in 2015 after she posted that “Georgio” had stopped making a favourite product.
Shila Iqbal
Actress Shila Iqbal was fired from Emmerdale in 2019 just a month after she was given a permanent role, when old tweets using homophobic and racist language, including the N-word, resurfaced.
Lindsay Lohan
It is unclear whether Lindsay Lohan was having a dig at rich celebs or whether she didn’t want to pay taxes herself when she tweeted Barack Obama in 2012 after he posted that he had cut taxes “for those who need it”.
Rita Ora
Rita Ora had a cringey moment in 2014 when a tweet said she would bring out new music if she got 100,000 retweets.
The post didn’t top 2,000 retweets and was deleted. Ora claimed her account had been hacked by someone else.
Elon Musk
A post by Elon Musk wiped £10.7billion off Tesla’s value and cut £2.3billion off his own stake. In 2018, his tweet about Tesla’s future on the New York stock exchange cost him and the company $40million in fines.
Prue Leith
IN 2017, Prue Leith accidentally revealed the results of the Bake Off final from overseas.
She deleted the tweet after realising she’d forgotten about the time difference – but too many people had already retweeted it.
Mary J. Blige
It was an ironic moment when Mary J Blige misspelt ‘intelligence’ in 2009.
She later apologised for her wrong spelling and thanked her fans for putting her right. She added: “This is how we learn”.
Justine Sacco
PR exec Justine Sacco shared this tweet just before her flight to South Africa in 2013.
The tweet was trending during the 11-hour flight and by the time she landed she had been fired.
Emily Thornberry
Emily Thornberry had to resign from the Labour shadow cabinet for posting this snap with the words “image from Rochester” in 2014.
David Cameron said she was “sneering at people who work hard”.
