Breakfast is considered as the most important meal of the day but what is the one thing you would rather NOT eat first thing in the morning? It is probably junk food, and most specifically, a slice or two of last night’s pizza. What we all do instead is stick to the usual box of cereals with some milk and get going for the day.
But, what if we told you, there might be actually nothing wrong in eating pizzas at breakfast? Science can back up your morning pizza craving!
The study
A new study researched in New York claims that eating pizzas at breakfast is actually healthier than the most preferred breakfast item, cereals. We are sure that you would have never read the words ‘pizza’ and ‘healthy’ in the same sentence but if you go by the study, your cereals aren’t nutritious either.
Nutritionist, Chelsea Amer, who conducted the study pointed out at the rather high sugar content in most breakfast cereals which cancels out the nutritional value in them. Thus, the healthy count in them is pretty much ‘zero’ no matter what it is advertised on the back of the label.
The study also made comparisons on the calorie count in both the food staples and it was observed that the number of calories in a slice of pizza equals that of a serving of cereals in milk. In fact, what might just make you reconsider your breakfast option the next time is that pizza actually contains a little more protein and less sugar in them as compared to a bowl of cereal, which is laden with artificial sugar. Having something high on protein keeps you fuller for longer, making it a good option for weight watchers as well. This also lessens the risk of getting a sugar rush which you get out of eating cereals.
However, the nutritionist also warns that this doesn’t mean you start eating pizza all the time. There are definitely better alternatives to breakfast you should keep in mind. She also adds,
“A cereal made with whole grains, nuts or seeds, and fruit with organic grass-fed milk or plant-based milk is a better choice over a grease-laden pizza made with processed meat on a white flour crust. A slice of pizza contains fatter and much less sugar than most cold cereals, so you will not experience a quick sugar crash.”
So, while pizza isn’t the most nutritious option on the menu, it definitely is healthier than sugary cereals.
