The Nma-Dzorn Mantse, Nii Bormnai Alarbi Petenpeh III, has recounted the tragic events that led to the death of a woman during a chieftaincy installation at Nungua.
According to him, the incident occurred on Saturday during the installation of a new chief for the Ga-Muslim community in Nungua West.
Speaking to Adom News, Nii Alarbi stated that the ceremony was proceeding smoothly when the unfortunate event took place.
He clarified that the deceased was not a queenmother but one of eight people selected to assist the newly installed chief.
“Due to the growing population, the Ga Adangbe Muslims decided to divide the community into four. They were in the process of selecting someone to support the already appointed leader, and the event started around 2:00 pm,” he explained.
“I was sitting at the high table when eight people—four men and four women—were called and sworn in. Afterward, the chief and his asafoatse were called,” he narrated.
In the midst of the joyous celebrations, Nii Alarbi said a gunshot was heard, and the deceased suddenly collapsed.
“She was down for about 30 seconds, and when people rushed to her aid, they realized she was not moving. We didn’t see anyone fire the gun, but we assumed it was shot into the sky,” he added.
He confirmed that the police arrested a suspect believed to have fired the shot, although witnesses did not see the person’s face.
“The lady was rushed to Ridge Hospital. About 10 minutes later, when I called to check on her condition, I was told she had passed on. I was shocked because the injury was in her thigh,” he lamented.
Nii Alarbi expressed dismay over the incident, stating that he could not understand why anyone would commit such a violent act, especially when there were no lingering disputes related to the installation.
